If you have raced BMX or been around the industry the setting of Black Mountain BMX has always been a favorable start to the outdoor race season. This year was no different as the full Factory Supercross Amateur squad would have a kickoff of sorts with everyone in attendance. The USABMX team did not for the first time in recent history designate this a pro race so our heavy hitting elite riders are headed to Florida but that didn’t stop the AMs from running out front all weekend. Being a chance to have the whole team out on the course we typically only focus on fun but it was evident we had a roster and a threat at taking a team sheet win! With riders turning fast laps it wasn’t a shock to see us finish on the Factory podium with a 3rd for our first effort of the year. You think we should chase it as a team? The scores were there hmmmmmm Check out how your favorite Supercross star did and get a glimpse of the results below!
Sequoia Gomolicke has been on an absolute tear not dropping a main all weekend and we aren’t the best at math but she should be sitting #1 in both class and cruiser with a slew of wins over the last few races. In between races you can find her in the pits showing her brother the fast lines!
Justin Perkins and Gaige Gomolicke also debuted as a heavy pair in 14X typically Dr. J is the only SX colors but we now have a 1-2 punch and they were enough to grab some keeper scores through the weekend. Perkins was in great form for his first race of the year and Gaige grabbed a few scores to add to an impressive season start.
Lego Man Ryder Merki was in the house and aboard his all new white Vision F1 and it’s secretly my favorite color and was easy to spot out front! He worked his way into class and cruiser mains throughout the weekend and dare I say he might be finally growing?!?! Usually the smallest guy in the class but has definitely been coming into his own.
Deegan Brown has been up front in the 16 cruiser class and added some more wins to the column and now can focus on the ultra tough 16x class. Chalk him up for a huge second place on Sunday which will be a keeper score as he ages into 17-20X later this season. He has become a contender on both bikes and is locked in for Oldsmar and some 8m sends this next weekend.
Another hot shoe amateur who is making the trip to Oldsmar was none other than Josh White. If you didn’t see him out front on the track surely you saw him featured on the TB products USABMX event shirt which was sold out in record time I heard. Always great to see a rider get some recognition and thrilled to see him make all mains and start the season off strong.
Turnell Henry and Gorgeous George Goodall were also in the house to test skills against the veterans of the sport. George was on home turf and used that knowledge to check in some mains and click off some fast laps. Turnell was rumored to be his last ride on his current bike as I heard the mad scientist has been cooking up a prototype to unveil soon. We are all watching closely to see what is in store and rumors are flying of another high end cromoly offering!
Last but never least and arguably our favorites are Bella Hammonds and Hurricane Hannah Leakey who were our representatives in 15/16 and 17-20 women classes. Both would make some main event appearances and rally to get through some tough semis as well. We look forward to seeing more of them and the season is early so we are eager to watch them get back to form and run up front!
This next weekend takes us back to Florida as our elite squad will fly off the 8m hill from Oldsmar BMX. A few of the ams are scheduled to be there also so make sure to tune in and cheer them on and above all get yourselves out to your local tracks and HAVE FUN!
